What is the cordon?
The cordon has its roots in the first indigenous settlements of Cuba, which is still practised today. The cordon is widespread in Cuba, as the ancestors were descendants of Indians. The traditions and customs have been passed down from generation to generation, so that to this day there are numerous cordon Spiritist centres in Cuba.
Process of the medial, practical application:
The mediums stand in a circle (cordon) and hold hands while walking in an anticlockwise direction. They sing and beat their feet on the ground at the same time, swinging their arms vigorously, until they fall into a trance. When they reach this particular state of mind, the medium can speak through the spirit to find solutions to problems or complaints. There are no clergy in the Cordon. The head medium (director) is generally responsible, but does not always participate in the chain of rituals themselves. Instead, the head medium acts as a guide during the actual ritual. Cordon differs from other religions in that there is no set religious doctrine.
