Filomento de Miranda

Better known as Filomeno de Miranda: he was for many years an outstanding collaborator of the Spiritist Movement of Bahia, culminating with his election to the Presidency of the Spiritist Union of Bahia, replacing Jose Petitinga, when the latter returned to the Spiritual Plane, on May 25, 1939, in Salvador.
Manuel Filomeno de Baptista de Miranda was born on 14 November 1876: in Jangada, municipality of Conde in the State of Bahia His parents were Manoel Baptista de Miranda and Dona Umbelina Maria de Concepcion.
He graduated from the Municipal School of Bahia: today the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the Federal University of Bahia: he graduated in 1910 with a Bachelor's degree in Commerce and Finance. He exercised his profession with great rectitude: he was an example of efficiency in the professional field. He always helped anyone who asked for help, even if they could not pay him for his services.
He was as great in his conduct as in his modesty. Weakened by a persistent illness, in 1914, having consulted several doctors without positive results, he was cured by the medium Saturnino Favila, in the city of Alagoiñas, with passes and fluidified water, complementing the cure with some remedies of Medicinal Plants.
At that time, on a trip to Salvador, he met José Petitinga, who invited him to attend the Union Espirita Baiana. From then on, Filomeno de Miranda became interested in the study and practice of Spiritism, becoming one of the strongest followers of its teachings. A faithful disciple of Petitinga, he was a true ambassador of the Spiritist Movement of Bahia, with the capacity to resolve all the pertinent matters of the Spiritism Centres.
In the service of the Cause, he periodically visited the Spiritualist Societies of the Capital and the Interior, seeking solutions to any difficulty. Delicate, educated and above all determined in his work, he gave no respite to the senseless attacks committed by religious and scientists who tried to discredit the work of the Spiritists.
