Henri Sausse

The Spiritist writer Henri Sausse was born on 6 May 1852 in Étoile-sur-Rhône [Drôme]. He was Allan Kardec's first biographer, having written Biographie d'Allan Kardec, in addition to several other works, namely: Biographie de Léon Denis (Biography of Léon Denis); Espérance et courage (Hope and Courage); Le Spiritisme à Lyon (Spiritism in Lyon); Des preuves? En voilà!! (Proof? Here it is!); La Réincarnation selon le Spiritisme (Reincarnation According to Spiritism); Les séances du Groupe Amitié (The Sessions of the Friendship Group); Mémoire adressé au Congrès Spirite de 1925 (Memoir addressed to the Spiritist Congress of 1925); Spiritisme transcendantal (Transcendental Spiritism); À la recherche des origines de l'âme humaine (In search of the origins of the human soul), etc.
Endowed with an iron will and great perseverance, a fighter willing to make sacrifices, Henri Sausse participated in numerous societies, including the Union Fraternelle de Valence and the Union Spirite Française, where he was highly esteemed. From 1869 onwards, he devoted himself to the intensive dissemination of Spiritism, revealing himself to be an admirer of Allan Kardec (1804-1869) and, later, of Léon Denis (1846-1927).
He joined the Spiritist Movement in Lyon, where he was one of the founders of the Société Spirite Lyonnaise in 1873. For more than twenty years, he was the very dynamic president of the Société Fraternelle pour l'Étude du Spiritisme (Fraternal Society for the Study of Spiritism). In 1885, he was also one of the founders of the Fédération Spirite Lyonnaise and its Secretary General until 1923. He wrote in the main European Spiritist periodicals. Febian biographers Zêus Wantuil and Francisco Thiesen report that Sausse was a merchant by profession, often having to face difficult, even critical moments, contesting gratuitous accusations made against Spiritists and the Doctrine, in addition to persecution by intransigent adversaries, demanding heroic testimony from him.
He passed away on 26 February 1928, in the same place where he was born.
