Love Among Spirits: An Eternal Bond Beyond Matter

Love, from the perspective of Spiritist doctrine, is not a mere passing emotion, but the supreme feeling and the “inner sun” that concentrates all the higher aspirations of the being. It is a divine essence that God has placed at the core of every heart as a sacred spark, destined to grow and strengthen through intelligence and moral development. In the spirit world, relationships are not governed by material interests but by the Law of Affinity. Spirits attract and group together according to the similarity of their feelings, preferences, and degrees of moral elevation. This sympathy is the foundation of “spiritual families,” groups of beings who share common goals and support one another in their progress. Unlike earthly affection, which is often clouded by selfishness or material passion, affection among spirits is stable and enduring, since it no longer bears the “mask” of hypocrisy or the fluctuations of physical passions.
One of the deepest revelations in the codification by Allan Kardec is that spirits do not have sex as understood on Earth, since sex depends on the physical organization of the body. Among spirits, there is love and sympathy, but these are based on the harmony of inclinations and instincts. The same spirit may incarnate as a man or a woman depending on the tests needed for its evolution; therefore, true love is a bond of the soul that transcends human sexual condition. Death does not destroy sincere bonds of affection. Upon discarnating, the spirit is often received by relatives and friends who preceded it on the journey, and who help it detach from material coverings. These “permanent friends” are beings with whom we may have shared centuries of work, suffering, and joy across various existences. Spiritism teaches us that no one is alone; even the most isolated person on Earth has spiritual friends who protect and love them.
Spiritist doctrine clarifies that there is no such thing as a fated or predestined union of two souls created from the beginning to be together, what is popularly known as “eternal halves.” If one spirit were the half of another, both would be incomplete on their own. The term is, in reality, a symbol of the union of two spirits that are perfectly sympathetic. The ultimate destiny of every spirit is not to be enclosed in exclusive love, but to expand its affection until it reaches universal love, loving all humanity as true brothers and sisters. Love is the most powerful driving force in the universe, capable of mobilizing the strongest energies for the soul’s fulfillment. It acts as a “shortcut” to wisdom, since one who acts with love for the common good advances far more in a single lifetime than one who focuses solely on intellectual development. Even former enemies, after forgiving one another and repairing their mistakes, eventually become fraternal spirits devoted to each other.
In short, love among spirits is the bond that maintains the unity of the Creator’s work. It is the force that drives us to overcome selfishness and work for the happiness of others, aware that the affection of the soul is the only treasure we will carry with us when we return to our true spiritual homeland.
