Dr. Manuel Sans Segarra
*25. April 1943

Dr. Manuel Sans Segarra, a physician and surgeon, has spent the last years of his career researching the existence of Supraconsciousness and near-death experiences (NDE). Supraconsciousness is a concept that refers to the consciousness that exists beyond the mind and physical body. It is a subject that has fascinated humanity for centuries, as it raises fundamental questions about the nature of reality and the fate of humanity.
Manuel Sans Segarra is a doctor specialising in general and digestive surgery, with a particular focus on oncological surgery. In his family, there were no previous doctors, and he was the first to take this path. His interest in medicine was sparked by stories of the Spanish Civil War from his mother, an operating theatre nurse, and his father, who also worked in the health field. He obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Barcelona, where he later became an Associate Professor. He specialised in General Digestive Surgery at the chair of Professor Dr. Pedro Piulachs at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, and subsequently devoted his entire career to the University Hospital of Bellvitge.
He pioneered the use of laparoscopy in General Surgery, and is a member of Surgical Societies in Catalonia, Spain, France, England and Japan. He is also Founder and President of the Association of Senior Physicians of the Bellvitge University Hospital.
Dr Manuel Sans Segarra's career has been guided by a commitment to the scientific method and a belief in the power of science to improve medicine.
An encounter changed their perspective
During an Emergency Department shift, the Doctor's life took an unexpected turn.
He had the experience of resuscitating a patient who had suffered clinical death as a result of a serious traffic accident.
After surgery and a successful outcome, the patient shared with the Doctor a near-death experience he had had during his critical period of clinical death.
This experience motivated him to further research and learn about Near Death Experiences (NDEs). He studied the work of experts in the field such as Elizabeth Kuhler-Ross, Raymond Moody, Eben Alexander, Melvin Morse among others and met with professionals from various disciplines, neurologists, psychiatrists and psychologists to better understand these phenomena.
This encounter changed his perspective on life and death. It made him question his previous beliefs and led him to explore areas of medicine and consciousness that he had not previously considered. He began to see that there was more to our existence than can be explained through the Cartesian and Newtonian scientific method.
Despite his scientific training, he came to the conclusion that the traditional scientific method could not fully explain these experiences. He sought answers in theoretical physics, which allowed him to better understand some of the phenomena reported by people who had experienced NDEs.
Theoretical physics, especially quantum physics, offers a view of the universe that goes beyond what we can perceive with our senses. It suggests that reality is far more complex and mysterious than we normally perceive it to be.
Through his study of theoretical physics, he began to appreciate that phenomena such as quantum superposition and entanglement could provide an explanation for some of the experiences reported in NDEs.
Populariser and lecturer at the present time
He has spent the last few years disseminating and sharing his knowledge to help people awaken a deeper understanding of reality.
He gives lectures and interviews to share his perspective, and has become one of the relevant people on this topic in Spanish. In autumn 2024 he will publish the book «La Supraconciencia: Vida después de la vida» (Supraconsciousness: Life after life) with journalist and entrepreneur Juan Carlos Cebrián Barrientos (Barcelona, 1977) as co-author.
