Foi psiquiatra forense e membro da aristocracia alem\u00e3, tornou-se interessado na pesquisa ps\u00edquica em 1889. Colaborou com Charles Richet, Cesar Lombroso, Oliver Lodge, e muitos outros em investiga\u00e7\u00f5es durante 40 anos. Enquanto ele estava relutante, aparentemente fora de conservadorismo cient\u00edfico, a mediunidade com a sobreviv\u00eancia, ele foi, todavia, convencido plenamente da realidade da mediunidade. Ele come\u00e7ou o trabalho com a m\u00e9dium Eus\u00e1pia Palladino, em cujas sess\u00f5es em Roma, ele estava presente j\u00e1 em 1894. Ele a seguiu por toda a Europa e convidou-a duas vezes a Munique como seu convidado. Mas ele n\u00e3o declarou sua cren\u00e7a na realidade dos seus fen\u00f4menos at\u00e9 1914 e s\u00f3 publicou seus registros de Roma e Munique, em sess\u00e3o Physikalische des Mediumismus em 1920. Seu livro, Phenomena of Materialisation, publicado na Alemanha em 1914, ao mesmo tempo como de trabalho Bisson em Fran\u00e7a, \u00e9 amplamente ilustrada com fotografias. Ele investigou tamb\u00e9m outros m\u00e9diuns cl\u00e1ssicos como: Willi Schneider, Rudi Schneider, Stanislawa e Valentine Dencausse. Foi um dos maiores pesquisadores dos fen\u00f4menos de efeitos f\u00edsicos na Alemanha. Sendo que obteve cabelos do esp\u00edrito materializado, comparando-os, microscopicamente com os da m\u00e9dium, constatando que n\u00e3o poderiam ser da mesma pessoa. Tamb\u00e9m deu resultado de exames qu\u00edmicos de uma certa por\u00e7\u00e3o do ectoplasma, que foi reduzido a cinzas. Entre os seus elementos encontrou cloreto de s\u00f3dio (sal de cozinha) e fosfato de c\u00e1lcio. Conseguiu filmar o ectoplasma saindo da boca do m\u00e9dium.
