Descendant de colons puritains et d\u2019eccl\u00e9siastiques, il fit ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 Harvard University afin de devenir, comme son p\u00e8re, ministre du culte. Il fut pasteur et pr\u00e9dicateur de la Seconde \u00c9glise de Boston, mais interrompit cette activit\u00e9 en raison de divergences doctrinales concernant l\u2019eucharistie. Il renon\u00e7a au sacerdoce en 1832, apr\u00e8s la mort de son \u00e9pouse, tout en conservant l\u2019esprit de sa secte (qui niait la Trinit\u00e9). En 1833, au cours d\u2019un voyage en Europe, il entra en contact avec Thomas Carlyle, Samuel Taylor Coleridge et William Wordsworth, adh\u00e9rant alors \u00e0 la pens\u00e9e transcendentaliste et id\u00e9aliste allemande, alli\u00e9e au n\u00e9oplatonisme, au mysticisme de Emanuel Swedenborg et au scepticisme de Michel de Montaigne. Toute sa vie, il tint un journal qui servit de base \u00e0 ses travaux, sermons et conf\u00e9rences. De retour aux \u00c9tats-Unis, il commen\u00e7a \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper sa philosophie \u00ab transcendentaliste \u00bb, expos\u00e9e dans des \u0153uvres telles que Nature, Essays et Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et solitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-1592ac9f0ecc6eabe7dbc740dfb908a2 wp-block-paragraph\">Il se consacra ensuite \u00e0 l\u2019enseignement et aux conf\u00e9rences. En 1835, il s\u2019\u00e9tablit \u00e0 Concord, village voisin de Boston et terre de ses anc\u00eatres, o\u00f9 il contracta un second mariage et s\u2019associa au groupe des transcendentalistes : Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Bronson Alcott et Margaret Fuller. Pour Emerson, le transcendentalisme \u00e9tait un effort d\u2019introspection m\u00e9thodique permettant d\u2019aller au-del\u00e0 du \u00ab moi \u00bb superficiel jusqu\u2019au \u00ab moi \u00bb profond, l\u2019esprit universel commun \u00e0 toute l\u2019humanit\u00e9. Son premier livre, Nature (1836 ; La Nature), rassemble l\u2019essentiel de sa philosophie, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e ensuite dans les deux s\u00e9ries des Essays (1841-1844). Une s\u00e9rie de conf\u00e9rences fut r\u00e9unie dans le volume Representative Men (1850 ; Hommes repr\u00e9sentatifs), auquel succ\u00e9d\u00e8rent d\u2019autres ouvrages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-59d40cd116e2b8d7cc51f24ab57b4d94 wp-block-paragraph\">Son \u0153uvre est vaste et constitue le noyau du transcendentalisme, \u00e0 travers lequel le romantisme trouva son expression aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Son syst\u00e8me n\u2019est toutefois pas enti\u00e8rement coh\u00e9rent, puisqu\u2019il associe au puritanisme la puissance de l\u2019instinct, la foi en la \u00ab lumi\u00e8re int\u00e9rieure \u00bb, l\u2019optimisme et l\u2019esp\u00e9rance comme voies de pens\u00e9e et de vie. Il demeure l\u2019une des figures les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres de l\u2019intelligence am\u00e9ricaine, avec un rayonnement universel.
