Il a laiss\u00e9 derri\u00e8re lui de nombreux travaux dans les domaines de l'astronomie et de la physique optique, o\u00f9 il s'est fait conna\u00eetre pour ses recherches sur l'illusion d'optique. Son travail en optique, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 en 1860, s'appelait l'illusion de Z\u00f6llner, dans laquelle des lignes parall\u00e8les apparaissaient comme des diagonales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-9d76aac10197e82541c38dd740f1a701\">Dans le domaine de l'astronomie, il s'est illustr\u00e9 en d\u00e9montrant la th\u00e9orie de Christian Doppler sur l'effet du mouvement sur la couleur du rayonnement \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tique des \u00e9toiles en raison de la d\u00e9viation des raies du spectre de la lumi\u00e8re \u00e9mise par ces corps c\u00e9lestes. Il a invent\u00e9 un appareil tr\u00e8s sensible, l'astrophotom\u00e8tre, capable de mesurer ces variations. En son honneur, l'un des crat\u00e8res de la Lune a \u00e9t\u00e9 baptis\u00e9 crat\u00e8re Z\u00f6llner. En 1872, il est invit\u00e9 \u00e0 occuper la chaire d'astrophysique \u00e0 l'universit\u00e9 de Leipzig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-cc719661acd816416f583f0972f8f467\">Il \u00e9tait membre de la Royal Society en Angleterre, de la Royal Astronomical Society \u00e0 Londres, de l'Acad\u00e9mie imp\u00e9riale des sciences physiques et naturelles \u00e0 Moscou et de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 scientifique d'\u00e9tudes psychiques \u00e0 Paris. D\u00e8s son plus jeune \u00e2ge, Z\u00f6llner s'int\u00e9resse aux ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes m\u00e9diumniques. Lorsque l'occasion se pr\u00e9sente en 1875, il se rend en Angleterre pour rendre visite \u00e0 l'un des plus grands scientifiques de l'\u00e9poque, William Crookes, qui est la figure de proue de la recherche sur les \u00ab effets m\u00e9diumniques \u00bb, tels que le mouvement d'objets sans l'interf\u00e9rence d'une source d'\u00e9nergie et la mat\u00e9rialisation d'esprits. Z\u00f6llner cherche une explication scientifique \u00e0 ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-2927b47045385cbeac6bac881e120425\">Apr\u00e8s sa visite, il a \u00e9labor\u00e9 une th\u00e9orie sur l'apparition de ces ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes. Selon sa th\u00e9orie, l'univers poss\u00e8de, en plus des trois dimensions spatiales euclidiennes, une quatri\u00e8me dimension par laquelle certains ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes spirituels peuvent \u00eatre expliqu\u00e9s. Selon cette th\u00e9orie, les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes m\u00e9diumniques pourraient perdre leur caract\u00e8re mystique et passer dans le domaine de la physique ordinaire et de la philosophie. Pour mieux comprendre ce qu'est la 4e dimension dans la conception physique actuelle, supposons que l'espace puisse \u00eatre courb\u00e9 \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de grandes masses gravitationnelles, qui ne peuvent le faire que dans le sens de la 4e dimension, et que tous les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes m\u00e9diumniques, ainsi que les d\u00e9placements d'entit\u00e9s spirituelles, soient effectu\u00e9s par cette 4e dimension. A propos de la th\u00e9orie de la 4\u00e8me dimension, Schiaparelli, le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre astronome italien, \u00e9crivait dans une lettre \u00e0 Camille Flammarion : \u00ab C'est la th\u00e9orie la plus ing\u00e9nieuse et la plus probable que l'on puisse imaginer \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-79265076d225811ff1ecdbc5f82f8fa4\">Pour confirmer sa th\u00e9orie, Z\u00f6llner organise de nombreuses rencontres avec des m\u00e9diums et des enqu\u00eateurs dans sa propre maison. En 1877, il re\u00e7ut pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 Leipzig le m\u00e9dium anglais Henry Slade. Slade fut le protagoniste de nombreuses manifestations d'effets physiques. Dans l'analyse de la m\u00e9diumnit\u00e9 de Slade, il est parfois assist\u00e9 par d'autres professeurs d'universit\u00e9, ce qui ajoute \u00e0 l'enthousiasme de ses recherches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-8b2f64385e7695d4bed46853fa905c90\">Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son travail avec ce m\u00e9dium, Z\u00f6llner a publi\u00e9 plusieurs articles dans des revues scientifiques et, plus tard, des livres sur la \u00ab physique transcendantale \u00bb. Comme Slade, Z\u00f6llner \u00e9tudie les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes produits par Madame d'Esperance, protagoniste d'apparitions et de transports d'objets. En mars 1880, le baron Von Hoffmann invite le m\u00e9dium anglais William Eglinton \u00e0 participer \u00e0 des r\u00e9unions avec Z\u00f6llner. Il y eut 25 r\u00e9unions au total. Eglinton \u00e9tait un m\u00e9dium pour les effets physiques, principalement la mat\u00e9rialisation et l'\u00e9criture directe.
