Afonso Maria Antonio Juan Cosme Dami\u00e1n Miguel \u00c1ngel Gaspar de Liguori was born on September 27, 1696, in his father\u2019s country house in Marinella, near Naples. He belonged to an ancient and noble family. His father, Don Jos\u00e9 de Liguori, was a naval officer and Royal Captain of the Galleys. His mother was of Spanish descent. He was the eldest of seven children and the hope of his household. Brilliant and quick to learn, he made great progress in all kinds of studies. His father made him practice the clavichord three hours a day, and by the age of thirteen he already played it with the perfection of a master. He rode horses and practiced fencing as recreation. He claimed that he could never become a marksman because of his extremely poor aim. During his youth, he became an admirer of opera. When the curtain rose, he would remove his spectacles so as not to see the actors clearly and thus be able to surrender more fully to the ecstasy of the music. Afonso was not educated in schools, but by tutors, under the watchful eye of his father. At the age of 16, on January 21, 1713, he graduated in Law, although it was customary at that time to obtain the degree at the age of 20. It was said that at that time he was so small that the academic robe completely enveloped him, causing laughter among the audience. Shortly after graduating, he studied for the examinations of the Order of Lawyers and, at the age of 19, was already practicing his profession at the Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his 8-year career as a lawyer, it is said that he never lost a case. However, in 1723, Afonso was one of the lawyers in a legal case between a Neapolitan nobleman and the Grand Duke of Tuscany, whose property was valued at 500,000 ducats. After delivering a brilliant opening speech, he sat down confident of victory. But a document that he had read and reread, although interpreted in a different way from the presentation made by his opponent before the Court, caused him to lose the case. For 3 days, he refused any kind of food. After the storm had passed, he began to think that the humiliation of defeat had been sent by God to break his pride and turn him away from the world. He was certain that some sacrifice was necessary, although he still did not know exactly what it would be. Disappointed, despite his father\u2019s distress, he decided to abandon his legal career. To keep himself occupied, he began visiting patients in hospitals for the incurable. In August 1723, precisely during one of those visits to the Hospital of the Incurables, he suddenly found himself surrounded by a mysterious light, and an inner voice told him: \u201cLeave the world. Give yourself to me.\u201d When the event happened once more, Afonso made the solemn decision to enter the ecclesiastical state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a priest, he continued working in a Hospital for the Incurables, assisted those condemned to the gallows, and became a friend of the marginalized, who were considered a wound in Neapolitan society. In a city of about 500,000 inhabitants and 15,000 priests, Afonso stood out as an extraordinary man who carried out his work in difficult and thankless circumstances. There were around 40,000 \u201coutcasts\u201d in Naples, and he began organizing \u201cnight chapels.\u201d These were gatherings of people in the streets and squares for the teaching of the Gospel, prayer, and fraternal fellowship. In the pulpit, he had an intelligent, simple, and sincere style that filled hearts with love and mercy. In the confessional, he was much more concerned with helping people than with punishing the \u201ccriminals.\u201d Despite everything, he remained restless. He had the intuition that something more needed to be done. It was after an encounter with the poor of the mountains, shepherds of sheep and goats, that he decided he would work among the poorest of the poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with a group of companions, he founded the Redemptorist Congregation on November 9, 1732, in Scala, near Naples. It was his response to the so-called \u201cThird World,\u201d formed by the poor and abandoned, since the Redemptorist missionaries were to live among the helpless, especially among those in the rural areas of that time. As a writer, he composed 113 theological, ascetical, mystical, and pastoral works, which reached 60 editions. He also left behind 1,700 letters. To compose his principal work, Moral Theology, he read 800 authors, taking notes on index cards. With a great desire for knowledge, he constantly searched the bookstores of Naples for the most recent works of his time. A versatile man, he was also a poet, musician, and painter. As a grammarian, he wrote grammar rules with the sole purpose of teaching literacy to a brother of the Congregation. An indefatigable worker, he even collaborated as a bricklayer in the construction of the Congregation\u2019s first retreat house. With so much work and dedication, he also had to face an insidious illness that turned his life into a martyrdom. Eight times he was close to death. An attack of rheumatic fever, between May 1768 and June 1769, eventually left him paralyzed until the end of his days. During the remainder of his physical life, he had to be fed through tubes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite all these problems, he could only return to his small cell in Nocera in July 1775, when he was relieved of his duties by the Pope. There were still 12 years of great afflictions and physical and moral suffering. The latter were caused by small internal disputes involving the Congregation, which deeply affected Afonso. At the age of 91, on August 1, 1787, he passed away. Recognizing his great merits, the Church decided to elevate him to the category of \u201cSaint,\u201d granting him canonization 49 years after his death. In The Book on Mediums (Part Two, Chapter VII, item 119), the Codifier refers to this canonization before the prescribed time, because Afonso was seen, during his earthly life, in two different places at the same time: in his priestly cell and assisting the Pope, who was undergoing the process of passing away, in the Vatican; this event was considered a miracle. In the same work, Afonso himself, questioned by Kardec, answers questions numbers 1 to 4 concerning bilocation. In 1871, Pope Pius IX conferred upon him the title of \u201cDoctor of the Church,\u201d and in 1950, Pius XII proclaimed him \u201cPatron of Confessors and Professors of Moral Theology.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
