On beautiful starry and moonless nights, all have beheld that whitish band which crosses the sky from one end to the other, and which the ancients called the Milky Way, because of its milky appearance. (...) Thus begins poetically point 32 of Chapter VI of Genesis. ) Thus poetically begins point 32 of Chapter VI of The Genesis, which, according to a footnote, states that it was taken verbatim from a series of communications dictated to the Paris Spiritualist Society in 1862 and 1863, under the title - Uranographic Studies, and signed GALILEO, with Camille Flammarion as medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that chapter we find the same enthusiasm of the scholar Galileo who one day took the telescope which he had built and which shortened thirty-three times the distance of the object, which he called the Old Discoverer, and turning it towards the sky, saw before his eyes the greatest spectacle accessible to human sight: the extraordinary panorama of the Infinite, with its paths illuminated by innumerable suns. On that memorable night, Galileo, enraptured, realised that what appeared to the naked eye to be a misty veil was in reality a band of stars, with countless others peering curiously through them. Modern astronomy was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the age of 17, Galileo Galilei, born on 18 February 1564 in Pisa (Italy), noticed the lamp in the vault of the cathedral of his hometown. Someone had pulled it to one side to turn it on, and when he released it, the lamp swung silently over the heads of the faithful, describing arcs that gradually became shorter and shorter. Galileo forgot to pray, forgot the purposes that had brought him to the church and, in a spirit of observation, measured the time of each oscillation with his own pulse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His family lost patience with the young man, as he experimented with pendulums, suspending them from ceiling beams and tree branches. The result was the invention of a pendulum that could be synchronised with the human pulse and which doctors began to use to measure patients' heartbeats. At his father's urging, he studied medicine at the University of Pisa, having failed as an assistant in the family shop. It was also his music-loving father who taught him to play the lute and organ. Galileo excelled as a painter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studying on his own, he discovered Archimedes, the greatest of Greek mathematicians and philosophers, and from this he invented a hydrostatic balance. He had the courage to refute Aristotle by demonstrating not only that bodies, regardless of their weight, fall with an accelerating velocity, but also that the acceleration of the fall is uniform. He brought to physics a new concept, that of inertia, i.e., the tendency of bodies to remain at rest or, when in motion, to continue moving in a straight line at the same speed unless an external force exerts some action on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the age of 24 he was a professor of mathematics at the University of Pisa, a post he lost for defending his ideas. He suffered persecution, had his salary reduced and eventually resigned. In 1592, the Republic of Venice invited him to teach at the University of Padua. For 18 years, with a salary that could be considered good, and in an atmosphere of intellectual freedom, Galileo invented a slide rule, a protractor, designed fortifications and machines for the siege of cities and bridges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were so many pupils that he was forced to teach in the open air. Finally, the Inquisition extended its ignorant arm and forbade Galileo to teach his theories, because the celestial movements revealed by the lenses of his telescope and his intelligence were contrary to the Scriptures. For 16 years he submitted. Then he decided to give birth to his Dialogues on the Major Systems, a debate between the theories of Ptolemy and Copernicus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Urban VIII saw his own caricature in one of the characters and Galileo was ordered to suspend the sale of the book, which, however, had already spread throughout Europe. At the age of 70, suffering from a double hernia and palpitations, Galileo appeared before the examination tribunal of cardinals in Rome. He was threatened with the most severe torture and, after four months, was forced to kneel and read aloud his refutation of Copernicus' ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His book was included in the Index and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Thanks to the intercession of the Duke of Tuscany, he was released from the dungeon where he rotted and remained in seclusion until his death, eight years later, in his house, always spied on. Even so, wise men from all over the world flocked to his house. With the light in his eyes waning and at the risk of his own life, the great genius allowed himself to write and submit for publication in countries where freedom of thought reigned, fragments of the book Dialogues on Two New Sciences, a work that made him the founder of experimental physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the year Isaac Newton was born, 1642, Galileo expired, blind and imprisoned. The piercing blue eyes of that chained eagle were closed to the physical world, so that his spiritual eyes could scrutinise the majesty of natural laws in complete freedom, liberated from the superstitions of his time. This is undoubtedly why he makes such a marvellous contribution to the fifth work of the Codification, closing the chapter by speaking of the diversity of the worlds, presenting them as ... the variegated stones of an immense mosaic, the diverse flowers of an admirable park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A park where, he said, God reveals himself at every moment and where human creatures can see through the telescope of science, which cannot stop progressing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
