Faith, Hope and Comforts<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The faith is man's confidence in his destiny, the feeling which leads him towards the infinite Power; it is the certainty of having entered upon the path which leads to truth. Blind faith is like a lantern whose red glow cannot pierce the mist; enlightened faith is a mighty beacon which illuminates with vivid clarity the path to be trodden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This faith is not acquired without having gone through the torments of doubt, through all the tortures that besiege the investigators. The latter obtain nothing but overwhelming uncertainty, and float for a long time between two contrary currents. Blessed is he who believes, knows, sees and walks in a sure way! His faith is deep, unshakable. It makes him capable of overcoming the greatest obstacles. In this sense, it has been said, figuratively, that faith lifts mountains, representing the mountains, in this case, the accumulated difficulties in the way of innovators, passions, ignorance, prejudices and material interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The faith is commonly seen only as belief in certain religious dogmas accepted without examination. But faith is also the conviction which animates man and directs him towards other goals. There is faith in oneself or in any material work, political faith and faith in one's homeland. For the artist, the poet and the thinker, faith is the feeling of the ideal, the vision of that sublime focus, lit by the divine hand on the eternal summits to guide humanity towards Beauty and Truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The religious faith, which dispenses with reason and refers to the judgement of others, which accepts a body of doctrine true or false and submits to it without verification, is blind faith. In its impatience, in its excesses, it easily resorts to oppression and leads to fanaticism. Considered in this light, faith is still a powerful motive. It has taught men to humble themselves and to suffer. Perverted by the spirit of domination, it has been the cause of many crimes; but, in its fatal consequences, it still shows us the multitude of resources that exist in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, if blind faith can produce such effects, what will not faith based on reason, faith that judges, discerns and understands? Some theologians invite us to despise reason, to disown it, to trample it underfoot. They object to all the errors into which it has fallen, and seem to forget that it is reason itself that has helped us to correct them. Should we then disown it, when it is reason itself that reveals to us what is good and beautiful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason is a higher faculty destined to enlighten us in all things; it develops and increases with exercise, like all our faculties. Human reason is a reflection of eternal Reason. \u2018It is God in us\u2019, said St. Paul. To disregard its value and usefulness is to disregard human nature and to outrage the Divinity itself. To want to replace reason by faith is to ignore the fact that the two are in solidarity. They affirm and enliven each other. Their union opens to thought a wider field; it harmonises our faculties and gives us inner peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The faith is the mother of noble sentiments and great deeds. The deeply convinced man remains unshaken in the face of danger, as in the midst of suffering. Above seductions, flatteries and threats, louder than the voice of passion, he hears a voice that resounds in the depths of his conscience, and whose accents revive him in the struggle and warn him in dangerous hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to produce such results, faith must rest on the solid foundation offered by free examination and freedom of thought. Instead of dogmas and mysteries, it must recognise only such principles as are deduced from direct observation and the study of natural laws. Such is the character of the spiritist faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Philosophy of the Spirits offers us a belief which is not, because it is rational, less robust. The knowledge of the Invisible World, the confidence in a higher law of justice and progress, gives to faith a double character of calm and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What, indeed, is there to fear, when one knows that no soul can perish, that after the storms and the tears of life, beyond the gloomy night where everything seems to sink, one sees the enchanted gleam of days that will never end?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When frosty old age creeps on, laying its stigma on our foreheads, dulling our eyes, wrinkling our limbs, bending us under its weight, then comes with it sadness, a distaste for everything, and a great sense of fatigue, a need for rest like a thirst for nothingness. Oh, in that hour of confusion, in that twilight of life, how the little light that shines in the soul of the believer, the faith in the infinite future, the faith in justice, in the Supreme Goodness, rejoices and comforts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Penetrated with the idea that this life is but an instant in the whole of our immortal existence, let us receive with patience the inevitable evils we face. The prospects of the ages ahead will give us strength to master our present miseries and to rise above the fluctuations of fortune. We shall feel freer and better armed for the struggle. Knowing the cause of his ills, the spiritist understands the need for them. He knows that suffering is legitimate, and accepts it without protest. For him, death does not mean nothingness; the bonds of affection persist in the life beyond the grave, and all those who are loved on Earth meet again, emancipated from earthly miseries, far from this hard mansion; there is separation only for the wicked. From these convictions the indifferent and the sceptical derive unknown consolations. If from one end of the globe to the other all souls were to commune in this mighty faith, we should witness the greatest moral transformation that history has ever recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, as yet, very few men possess this faith. The Spirit of Truth has spoken to the earth, but the earth has not listened attentively to its accents. It is not the mighty who have listened, but rather the humble, the small, the disinherited, all who thirst for hope. The Spiritist Revolution was at first strongly opposed in religious and scientific circles. This state of affairs is tending to subside. Very few men have the courage to disavow and confess that they have been mistaken; most of them prefer to fight for their whole lives against a truth which may compromise their interests or destroy their claims. Others secretly recognise the goodness and greatness of this doctrine, but its moral demands frighten them. Clinging to their pleasures, desiring to live as they please, and heedless of the Hereafter, they put out of their minds anything that would lead them to break with the pernicious customs dear to them. These theories will therefore be for them a source of bitter sorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our feverish society takes too little care of moral teaching. Too many contradictory opinions stumble and clash; in the midst of this confused state, driven by the whirlwind of material life, man reflects little. But every sincere spirit seeking faith and truth will find it in the New Revelation. An influence from on High will sweep over him and guide him into this dawning light which will one day illumine the whole of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
