The study and application of the mediumistic faculties are of paramount importance, for depending upon the use to which these gifts are put, they can be of good or evil to those who possess them and to the cause they are intended to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritism is a two-edged weapon: a powerful weapon with the support of higher spirits to combat error, lies, and all the moral miseries of humanity; but also a dangerous weapon because of the action of inferior and evil spirits. In this case, it can be turned against mediums and experimenters, and can injure their health and dignity, causing them serious disorders. In spiritism, everything depends on the Invisibles. The nature and quality of their action vary according to the value of the entities manifesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The high spirits pour upon us pure and beneficent fluids that comfort our souls and soothe our pains, predisposing us to goodness and charity. In their dealings we gain the strength we need to overcome our defects and to perfect ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manifestations of the lower spirits may be useful for the proofs of identity they provide, but in the long run their heavy and unwholesome fluids alter the state of health of the mediums, cloud their judgment and conscience, and in certain cases lead to obsession and insanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tragic scenes described by Dr. Paul Gibier in his book Spiritism or Western Fakirism, of which he almost fell victim, the examples we find almost everywhere, demonstrate to the point of evidence the risks involved in establishing relations with certain inhabitants of space. Practising mediumnity without taking the necessary precautions is tantamount to opening the door wide to muggers in the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us remember what the indispensable precautions consist of. Before each s\u00e9ance, it is necessary to invoke the spirit guides and to ensure effective protection, which, by keeping away evil influences, establishes in the invisible atmosphere the same discipline that the president of the group must impose on those present. To this end Allan Kardec recommends prayer, and we do not hesitate to insist on this opinion. No doubt, like him, we will be treated as mystics, whereas what we do is to observe and apply the universal law of vibrations which unites all beings and all worlds and binds them to God. Science is beginning to stammer out the first elements of this law with the study of the radioactivity of bodies, with the application of waves and currents over long distances. But as it pursues research in the domain of the Invisible, it will see its marvellous harmony and its vast consequences. From this point of view, splendid discoveries are in store for him, for therein lies the whole secret of the higher life, of the free life of the Spirit in space, and the rules of its manifestations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With thought and will we can set in motion all the forces hidden within ourselves. Our fluidic radiations are imbued with the qualities or defects of thought and create around us an atmosphere of conformity to our state of mind. As prayer is the highest and purest expression of thought, it traces a fluidic pathway which enables the entities of space to descend towards us and communicate; in groups, it is a means favourable to the production of phenomena of a high order, while at the same time it preserves against evil spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be effective and to produce the full desired effect, prayer must be an ardent, spontaneous appeal, and therefore of short duration; on the contrary, vulgar prayers, recited from the lips, without communicative warmth, produce only weak and insufficient radiations. It is easy to understand, therefore, the necessity of a union of thoughts and wills in the sessions. It should be borne in mind, above all, the importance in fluidic emissions of the sentiments of faith, of confidence, of disinterestedness, in a word, all the moral qualities, the facilities they give to good spirits, and the obstacles they place in the way of the action of evil-minded spirits. And all this without excluding the free examination and the conditions of control which no observer should ever abandon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor should it be surprising if the results obtained are relatively laborious and poor, in surroundings where an atmosphere of scepticism reigns, where the phenomena and the spirits are sought to be ordered about, and where, unwittingly, hindrances are created to manifestations of a higher order. Moreover, the chairman of each group should endeavour to obtain silence and recollection during the sessions, and to avoid inopportune and overly personal questions intended to be addressed to the spirits, in order to maintain as far as possible the union of thoughts and wills by directing them towards a common purpose. Divergent thoughts and material concerns form conflicting currents, a kind of fluidic chaos which makes it difficult for the guides to intervene, while the concordance of intentions and feelings establishes the harmonious fusion of the fluids and creates an atmosphere conducive to their action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The session should end with a few words of thanks to the protecting spirits and an invitation to those present to make use of the teachings received by practising the morals derived from them. By their criticisms our inexperienced opponents often demonstrate their lack of competence in these matters. But, on the other hand, all magnetisers know the property of the fluids to reflect exactly our state of mind and know how to imprint upon them sometimes beneficial and curative qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also possible to demonstrate experimentally the existence and infinite variety of these fluids which differ in each personality. Photographic plates can easily be impressed with the radiations emanating from our fingers and our brains and our effluvia, which vary according to personal dispositions, can be recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exercise of mediumnity encounters two fearful stumbling blocks: the spirit of profit and pride. How many mediums who have begun with a sincere desire to serve our cause have ended up, at the instigation of the latter defect, by falling into ridicule, becoming the derision of all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If self-satisfaction is perfectly legitimate when it is the result of qualities or merits acquired by prolonged work or study, how can one feel pride in a faculty which has come from Above and which has required neither expense nor effort? It is pride which inspires those rivalries, those petty jealousies between mediums, which are frequent causes of disintegration in certain groups. It is necessary that each should be content with what he receives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the medium is free from vanity, is simple of heart, and, with the sincerity of his soul, under the gaze of God, offers his assistance to the good spirits, they hasten to assist him, and help him to develop his faculties. Sooner or later they bring his deceased relatives, the beloved dead, to his side, and a sweet intimacy, a source of joy and consolation, is resumed. Gradually the medium becomes the blessed artisan of the work of renewal. He receives and transmits the instructions which enlighten life and trace to all the way of ascension; he then provides the moral aid which makes duty easier and trial more bearable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, by the teaching of the spirits, the notion of justice will spread through the world. Knowing that we are almost all come to atone for past faults, man will not be inclined to murmur against his lot, and his thoughts will rise above the miseries of this world, and his actions and his words will not add to the weight of iniquities which are upon him. Then social life will be improved and humanity will advance a step forward. All those humble lives of mediums, which otherwise would remain obscure and insignificant, will be enriched by the mission received, illumined by a divine ray, and will become elements of progress and regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contact with the Invisible, with the pure and great souls, increases the psychic faculties and multiplies the means of perception. In well-directed seances the medium increasingly perceives the radiations, the effluvia of the higher worlds. He experiences an expansion of his being, a sum of joys which escape analysis and which are like an anticipation of the spiritual life, a prelude to the life of space. It is a compensation offered, already in this existence, for the fatigue and toil implicit in the exercise of mediumnity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sincere, loyal, disinterested medium, as we have said, can be sure of the assistance of good spirits; but if he allows himself to be overcome by the love of gain or by pride, the guiding spirits withdraw, and give place to light and backward spirits. Then deception and trickery abound. Messages appear signed with pompous names, from statesmen, kings, emperors, famous poets, and when these communications are sifted through the sieve of reason and reflection, one realises that he is the victim of a fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not that we mean to say that these spirits never communicate. But we advise the greatest caution on this point, for we know from experience that the higher spirits who have borne illustrious names on earth do not like to boast of them, preferring to manifest themselves under allegorical names or pseudonyms. Too many mediums have thus contributed to the distortion of spiritism. Allan Kardec, by the rectitude of his character, the dignity of his life and the elevation of his thoughts, has had the privilege of attracting noble and elevated spirits. Let us read and meditate upon his books, which are an expression of the purest wisdom and truth. For example, in his works, this great writer has always stood up with vigour against the principle of paid mediumship, as the cause of innumerable abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us remember first of all that mediumnity is variable, changeable, and can disappear just as it has come. It does not require previous studies or laborious preparation like the acquisition of an art, of a science, etc. It is a gift which is withdrawn when it is abused: examples of this are frequent. Mediumnity, the results of which vary greatly according to the place, the environment and the occult protection, and are often even negative, lends itself little to regular and continuous use. Serious guides, high spirits, would not lend themselves to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We admit, however, that learned men and experimenters who avail themselves of a medium's faculties and take up his time, should make arrangements with him and compensate him for his journeys and for hours lost. We also believe that groups owe mediums, after long service, tokens of sympathy and attention, provided this does not violate the principle of free and disinterested mediumship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may be objected that Allan Kardec has been dead for fifty years. Circumstances, it will be said to us, have changed, Spiritism has spread, science is beginning to take an interest in its phenomena, and it is convenient to provide it with the means of verifying and confirming them. To this we will reply that the precepts formulated by Allan Kardec have not lost their opportunity. And it is precisely because Spiritism is spreading and is called upon to play a great role, because it carries within itself the elements of salvation and regeneration, that we must endeavour to preserve it from all defilement, to avoid anything that might diminish its value and its beauty. However, it is indisputable that all profit inspires distrust. The desire for gain leads to charlatanism and deception. When the medium has got into the habit of taking material advantage of his faculties, he gradually slips into fraud; for, if the phenomena do not occur, he contrives to imitate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wherever the spiritism is traded, serious spirits are driven away and inferior spirits take their place. In these environments spiritism loses all beneficent and moralising influence and becomes a real danger, an exploitation of pain and of the memory of the dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, we repeat to the spiritism and mediumship: In your meetings always practise recollection and prayer. Let it be a luminous rocket that reaches its goal directly and brings you the good spirits, otherwise the souls you desire will not come, your beloved dead will not come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don't make your seances an object of amusement, of curiosity, a spectacle for gawkers, but a serious and solemn act, an act of intellectual and moral culture. Do not attract spirits of a lower order, whose fluids may alter your health and may provoke cases of obsession. Do not evoke your guides, but do so consciously and with respect. All have their mission to fulfil in the Beyond; their occupations are manifold and absorbing. Their life is far from the bliss dreamt of; it is a constant activity, a self-sacrificing dedication to all great causes. Their teachings, their counsels will help you to endure the vicissitudes of earthly existence. They will give you the certainty of new lives to come, lives of work, of purification, of duty whereby your souls, as they become more weightless, will one day ascend to those luminous spheres wherein they will begin to enjoy the joys of the infinite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this moment a great hope is rising in the world; a new dawn is beginning to dawn for thought and science. The Spiritism, which is based on truth, is imperishable, but its progress can be hindered by the errors and faults of its own adherents, even more than by the opposition and manipulations of its adversaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day will come when all that the spirits have been teaching for nearly a century about the perispirit, the fluids, the succession of existences, will be accepted as true and confirmed by science. The importance of prayer in the universal communion of beings will then be recognised. And the monotonous and interminable litanies of the Church will cease to give place to the cry of the soul to its Father, to the ardent appeal of the human being to Him from whom everything emanates and to whom everything returns eternally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When that day comes, religion and science will merge in a wider conception of life and destiny. The Spiritism will be the cult of the family; the more educated, the more cultured father will replace the priest; the wife and daughters will be the mediums through whom the ancestors, the manes of the grandparents will manifest themselves and secure their moral influence. It will be a return to simple and primitive religion, enriched by the progress and evolution of the centuries; upon this family cult will be built the foundation of the grandest gatherings and the highest aesthetic manifestations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, in order for the spiritism to carry out its entire renovating programme, it is necessary to separate from its bosom the morbid germs, all the bad elements that could hinder or stop its impulse. From this point of view, the responsibility of spiritism is great, for they must carefully avoid anything that might retard the great flowering of our beliefs and their moralising effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spiritism, after having been so long scorned and scorned, is finally imposing itself by the power of its deeds and the moral beauty of its doctrine. It has become a radiant force which is gradually spreading throughout the world. After the trials of a five-year war, after the mourning and emptiness caused by so many departures, many tearful glances turn to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We, who have known the difficulties and sufferings from the very beginning, note with joy this immense impulse which leads souls towards our beliefs. However, in order to ensure its diffusion and ultimate triumph, to gain the respect of its own adversaries and to play the saving role that is its due in the work of the revival of the Fatherland, The Spiritism must fulfil an absolute condition, without which no success is possible, and this condition is none other than that of always being honoured, following the traditions of its venerated Codifier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
