The Spiritism does not come to tear down any temple, nor to conquer one by one the faithful of Catholicism; for then it would do the same as the other religions, which dispute over saints and miraculous legends, canonries and prebends, tales and traditions. Ah! No; it is very far from that; for the Spiritualist School is very rationalistic and does not want retrogression; it dreams of progress, of human redemption; it believes that yesterday and tomorrow and the present are all one; and that there is no man whose aspiration is vain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All can ascend and go up to the heavens, the future of man and woman being equal, they believe that to will is to be able, that a firm will, going after truth and cherishing a great desire, makes a pygmy giant longing for his freedom. This is the noble mission of spiritism, to say to man: you yourself must make your own redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no religion that can redeem you; you have to cultivate your own soil, and only by being very good, you will have a good future. It is useless for you to distribute your goods among saints, their heavenly prayers are not enough for goods. Then you must go on conquering the heavens, lavishing your consolations on the unhappy afflicted, and giving to the helpless your compassionate cares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wouldst thou spend thy wealth in erecting a shrine? Ah!... for it is more necessary that thou shouldst watch for poverty. The hungry people do not pray, they exercise their idleness by seeking in dynamite the horrors of havoc; he who by force is lazy, meditates only on crime. Protect agriculture, raise model farms, and make fruitful the hard soil that the good plough crushes, then, looking upwards through powerful telescopes, ask yourself what you feel there, where your soul rises the highest, whether in a sad cave or before splendid worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not distribute your wealth, but make it productive, and you will redeem captives from social infamies. Great evils afflict you, but no religion will give you salvation, nor will atheism; it is only spiritism that will give the solution. To the great social problem, the discontent of all; that one and all, like drunkards in an impure bacchanal, you do evil for evil's sake, you live... without knowing how to live, going down... you want to go up, running away... you want to arrive; what a way of delirium and what a way of suffering!...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rich fear the poor, believing that one day the poor will say with fierce irony: do not give me, no, what you have left over, I want your gold and not your copper, that is what I want in my anger, because you have kept me in abandonment for a long time for my evil; if you do not give me what I ask of you, tremble... because I will not forgive you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with what sadness does the poor man see the rich man pass by in his reclining carriage, insulting his poverty... From this unevenness, the storm begins to rise, and humanity lives amidst deceit and perfidy, amidst resentment and envy in horrible darkness. For this evil (which is old), there is no medicine on earth; war is the usual remedy, but this remedy is old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than weapons, you earthlings need good advice; you need to know why your evils overwhelm you with their weight, and how progress wins in social struggles. For Spiritism comes to reveal to you the way to progress and to redeem yourselves. Without any fanaticism coming to disturb the mind, without the faith of the believer robbing reason of its empire, without any miraculous mystery that would threaten his good sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reasoned study of sound philosophy, a day by day examination of the present and the past. From every accomplished deed the consequence awaits, and thus you may reap the fruits you desire, of which crimes you sow, accounts you will have to settle. Those of you who in holy self-denial go to the point of sacrifice, and turn away from the precipice the dreadful temptation, who in mad obstinacy would by violence seek to find what he cannot find, (because he never sowed good) by serving as his support, how much progress you can make!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like sowing, like reaping, this is life; there is no more; at your step you will find what you did at another date. Did you suspect? Suspicion will follow in your footsteps, Did you slander? For suffering you will suffer slander from another; each one forms the colt on which he lives by dying. It is not a single existence in which the soul wavers, its organism is annihilated, but not its intelligence, which, acquiring experience, is taking incarnations, and to civilisations it is lending its assistance, and working and struggling it is overcoming its passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the truth, this is the truth, Redeem oneself! This is Spiritism, Port of humanity! This is the beautiful equality of which all dreamed; but all were delirious, because in their dreams they did not see that those who struggled to live were never equal. Here is the noble mission of Spiritism; to say to man: you yourself will achieve your redemption; no religion, no social change will take away from your evil, not one atom of its weight; your progress is your own work, and universal progress!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
