What is true Charity, according to Spiritism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For us spiritists, it appears everywhere, in all literature. Kardec made it a necessary basis for all happiness, saying: \u2018outside of charity there is no salvation\u2019. The statement, of course, was born out of a certain opposition to religious dogmatism, which tried to proclaim that salvation was in every sect, in an exclusivist and even selfish way, but it remains true, because, without charity, there is no love. for others...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the term charity has now taken on the connotation of welfarism, almost exclusively, becoming synonymous with material donation. But for us to really understand it in the spiritism context, we need to go back to the context of Allan Kardec in France in the mid-1850s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to highlight that the term charity used by Kardec, for Rational Spiritism, at that time (different from the current definition of the term, close to welfare), represented acting out of duty, that is to say, freely, consciously, intentionally, independently of punishments and rewards, with full understanding of the moral law. Charity is a principle that orients the integral action of the being, and not a complementary activity, as if it were an accessory conduct. [...].<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We thus see that charity, properly understood, must constitute the way of being, the way of proceeding, and not be limited to isolated actions that often speak more of the need to be seen as a \u2018charitable person\u2019, a situation in which there is no true charity, but only ego and vanity. More than that, charity is not limited to material donations. In fact, I would say that it is, most of the time, the opposite of material giving, since those who donate materially, be it money, food, things, often do so as a form of relief of conscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let's think: how many people use donations to, by reselling resources, obtain money to buy medicines? How many people, having easy resources at their disposal, throw themselves into the worst vices and wastefulness, digging themselves deeper and deeper into the same hole they are sinking into? Does giving to these people on a regular basis really help their situations? Could it really be that if the rich simply gave away their fortunes, human misery would end?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am by no means saying that we should not donate material resources; but let us think beyond that, analysing each situation and seeking to be fraternal with the brother who seeks us out, genuinely concerned about that person's situation. Often, a simple question like \"Why are you on the street, brother? What's going on?\" can pave the way for a much more fruitful relationship which, let's not forget, benefits both sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The individual who really wants to do good does not do charity once a month or once a week: he or she is kind, all the time. And being charitable is about putting others before our own wants and needs. How often do people who are going through the most difficult times in their lives find the strength to give charity by giving a smile to someone who is crying even harder?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we think, therefore, of charity, we must necessarily think of one thing: to go beyond it. If we donate something material, let this be only the door to create a bond and an opening to deepen the relationship with the brother who may be suffering a lot. But, above all, let us not forget that the greatest charity we can give to others is to bring them love, faith and comfort, especially through the example of someone who lives what he says and not just as someone who throws words to the wind. .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is, therefore, a kind of charity to humanity that we should strive for our own moral betterment, seeking to change ourselves in the light of that which comforts us and, in our case, by studying with dedication Spiritism, a doctrine which, many times in life, saved us from bad decisions or led us to better paths. Let us learn to spread it without scandalising, that is, without starting conversations by talking about reincarnation and obsession, but rather by presenting the comforting philosophy found in this Doctrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we will walk out the door and find people everywhere, desperately in need of something to comfort them, to help them get the thought of giving up out of their heads, to help them get through the trials of life with unwavering faith and firm determination. They are almost always difficult people, because of the moment of crisis in which they live, and would it not be a greater charity to strive to help them, persistently and fraternally, even though we know that we will often experience difficulties in this initially difficult contact?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believe me, brethren: we do far greater charity by leaving behind our imperfections and spreading comforts and insights that can change, forever, the direction of a Spirit, than simply donating a \"thing\", which He will use and discard, while we turn our backs on Him and go on with our lives, unwilling to go any further.
