He was the teacher of Hippolyte Leon Denizard Rivail (Allan Kardec).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-b1f746c156caac666214b443a77b6198 wp-block-paragraph\">His father, a surgeon, died when he was 6 years old; thus, the child's upbringing was predominantly maternal and developed in him a sentimental and shy character.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-360e77508674da3ab16e18a596807a9b wp-block-paragraph\">At the age of 18, he attends the humanities college in Zurich and then begins a theology degree, but reading Rousseau makes him abandon his ecclesiastical goal. He begins studying jurisprudence and then spends a year learning agricultural techniques with an engineer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-dac8a6a4ec51803c11cb3b492f9c6c6e wp-block-paragraph\">In 1775 he opened a school for poor children in Neuhof, modelled on Rousseau's Emilie, whose pupils were not only instructed by him but also employed in remunerative work. The project failed, as did a similar one in Stans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-12479a70e67f299929b1957df2ad06b3 wp-block-paragraph\">In 1797 he published \"My Inquiry into the Course of Nature in the Development of Mankind\", his most important work. He resumed his teaching practice in a castle in Bern on loan from the government, an experience he reflected in his work \"How Gertrud Teaches Her Children\" (1801).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-70c90f5fada324af07ca8a17570e70d3 wp-block-paragraph\">After the Swiss Revolution of 1798, the Swiss government entrusts Pestalozzi (who collaborated politically with him) with the education of war orphans and poor children in the region. With this experience, which lasted for seven months, Pestalozzi was introduced to the world of education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-50e644c7f64fa9ed8384b65eddb8c6f7 wp-block-paragraph\">In Yverdon (1804-1825), Pestalozzi's educational institution reaches its fullness and international reputation, he perfects and spreads his method.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-5c856daf45f2d04b6de06b0ff83b7a9b wp-block-paragraph\">In 1811, he and his collaborators mention the Pestalozzian system under the name of \"very elementary education\", which consists of making the process of human development (sensitive, intellectual and moral) follow the evolutionary course of the child's nature, without artificially anticipating it. Education is seen as a \"help\" and educational and teaching activity as an \"art\". The fundamental nucleus of education is the family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-581170ff173dcf228d9f1ef69dae2cac wp-block-paragraph\">For Pestalozzi, the aim of education is to develop human abilities in their threefold activity: Spirit: intellectual life, Heart: moral life, Hand: practical life. He also placed great value on religious education, as long as it was not dogmatic or confessional in character.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-8186d6ec88d3a9e141be6d2f0205146b wp-block-paragraph\">There are three planes to highlight in his thinking: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-6c1850a2cb340e30102aaa9d99e8fad7 wp-block-paragraph\">1) Naturalistic Pedagogy, the child must be educated in freedom, that he\/she can act in his\/her own way in contact with nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-63afc54188381f3c2eab538d1e7ee432 wp-block-paragraph\">2) One method: global intuition<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-aa5743e4fa975b26d438cc3b455b1140 wp-block-paragraph\">3) The purpose is education<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-f82f62a7b14072b607fb97eb867c6fbb wp-block-paragraph\">In his Naturalist pedagogy he was guided by his humanitarian spirit, his dedication to the people and the poor. He was the creator of the popular school, open to everyone, regenerated in a social spirit, neither public nor institutional.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-363911ecde30585fc6828af1ec7b3d14 wp-block-paragraph\">For Pestalozzi the social function of education was to integrate poor children into social life by teaching them a trade. He believed that his own pupils \u2013 in the long run \u2013 would be the educators of tomorrow. He had a very clear concept of values, for him education had to be egalitarian, i.e. to educate marginalised people. He had full confidence in the virtues of popular education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-4940fac4616f9682a916c7f15d7d8855 wp-block-paragraph\">As a Roussonian, he put Rousseau's naturalism into practice, for example: he did not teach his children to read until the age of 11.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-0419bff286c41979bdc5ca533386142c wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding the intuitive method he wrote: &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-61dc037a8ff290015e8f491b1896f35a wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<br>\"I believe that we cannot dream of achieving progress in the instruction of the people until we have found forms of teaching which make the teacher, at least until the end of elementary studies, the simple mechanical instrument of a method which owes its results to the nature of its procedures, and not to the ability of the person who practises it\".&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-77269249113f2b97b38a2f004a15b30a wp-block-paragraph\">Pestalozzi still has a profound influence on all aspects of education today and is known as \"the educator of mankind\".&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-61b52d8514415ab56777f4a822f23462 wp-block-paragraph\">As a writer, he has published the following works:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-6ed73f13c3ea592cdac471e3aa90d1ab wp-block-paragraph\">\"A Hermit's Evenings\" (1780)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-59e51dc2ea4a29552e0dce78455d2ec8 wp-block-paragraph\">\"Leonardo y Gertrudis\" (1781), a pedagogical novel&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-e42877f98e301b05f6cfc79ffa97659f wp-block-paragraph\">\"Christopher and Elsa\" (1782)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-9a812aca01eb08b4cbd72da6ed3d01ba wp-block-paragraph\">\"My researches on the march of nature in the development of the human race\" (1797)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-a8231f42b488f4e61434659f8a8dddd1 wp-block-paragraph\">\"How Gertrude Teaches Her Children\" (1801)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-a8b17ae1963972beba9d87b9f1ef9f17 wp-block-paragraph\">In 1803, the government published his three elementary books:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-7d41b5b187326e10c570355b0d01e2a0 wp-block-paragraph\">\"The Book of the Mothers\"&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-d8983f4c6c54b2c6e8a985271bd1721c wp-block-paragraph\">\"A B C of intuition\"&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-36dca1ff98d2cdf3f8bddafff6102612 wp-block-paragraph\">\"The Intuitive Teaching of Numerical Relationships\"&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-6d6773e4b0991f135a2e07f309612aee wp-block-paragraph\">He spent the last years of his life in Neuhof. There he wrote \"The Swan Song\", a work in retrospect that condenses the main points of his doctrine and destinies, in which he refers to the sometimes bitter experiences of his life as an educator.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-bef8a2a47533e05f71def5181ab1d1b6 wp-block-paragraph\">Founder of the new folk school in Yverdon, with eighty years of life dedicated to the service of the people.
