Aurora de los Santos<\/strong> ( 1890-1969 )<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The uruguayan Spiritism owes much to this woman, who with her example and devotion contributed to spread Kardec's ideas on the other side of the Rio de la Plata. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She founded the first Spiritist Institution in Uruguay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was the daughter of Jos\u00e9 Fabr\u00edcio dos Santos, a Brazilian, and Petrona Tejera, a Spaniard. She lived in the department of Rivera, on the border with Brazil. She was able to attend only the first years of school. His life was full of hardships and sacrifices. They were farmers of the land. Since she was a child, mediumistic phenomena of clairvoyance were revealed in her, which her parents tried to repress, as they did not know their true causes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was the mother of seven children from two marriages. In 1933 her first husband disincarnated, leaving her destitute and destitute. In those moments of anguish she met a lady, Valentina, who gave her some pamphlets on Spiritism. Reading them filled her soul with peace and understanding. Full of faith she began to frequent, together with her children, some spiritism centres that existed in the border towns of Rivera and Livramento. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She devoted herself to reading the book The Gospel according to Spiritism by Allan Kardec. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1935 she moved to Montevideo in search of better wages. She was a dressmaker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, in Montevideo, she was very tired and asked one of her sons to read her the only book of poetry, The Gospel. On that occasion a Spirit manifested himself, to the young woman's surprise, and told them not to be afraid, that he was only coming to help. He asked them to gather three or four people together and then he would return. So they did and the next day they met to begin the mediumship journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aurora developed especially the healing mediumship, obtaining miraculous cures for the blind, the paralysed, cancer patients and people who had no hope from earthly medicine. In a short time her fame spread throughout the region and sick people came to her in their hundreds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time Spiritism was almost unknown in Uruguay. Aurora was accused of illegal practice of medicine. She was imprisoned for several months. Her poor children were sent to different places, including asylums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When she was released from prison, she immediately went back to work in mediumnity, helping his brothers and sisters in need, both in body and soul. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of struggle, persecution and aggression, she managed to obtain legal status for the first spiritism centre in Uruguay: \"Centro Evang\u00e9lico Hacia la Verdad\" (Evangelical Centre Towards the Truth), inaugurated on 31 May 1944. This achievement was obtained thanks to his untiring faith and work in favour of the spreading of Christian truth. The friendly Spirit who manifested Herself that day, never ceased to assist and help her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazilian writer and speaker Newton Boechat wrote about it in 1966: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Do\u00f1a Aurora, pioneer of the Uruguayan Spiritist Movement, remarkable medium and divulgator, today rests from the struggles of yesteryear, when her organism was vigorous and strong. She faced, many times, jail, persecution and attacks from terrible adversaries to make the spiritism message evident. The Centre Towards Truth is the fruit of his work for the Good, having obtained legal status in 1944\".<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today this Spiritist Centre is still active and has a beautiful library. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
