Die Tochter von Tom\u00e1s Armstrong, einem protestantischen Engl\u00e4nder, starb als sie erst f\u00fcnf Jahre alt war, und Ramona M\u00e1rquez, einer katholischen Mutter, die sie im Alter von dreizehn Jahren als Waise mit einem neunj\u00e4hrigen Bruder zur\u00fccklie\u00df, widmete ihr Leben dem Kampf f\u00fcr die Emanzipation der puertoricanischen Frauen. Mit einer originellen und komplexen Denkweise analysierte sie eine Gesellschaft, die strukturell von Patriarchat, Frauenfeindlichkeit und religi\u00f6sem Fanatismus gepr\u00e4gt war, und kam zu dem Schluss, dass nur die Frauen, die von der Tradition beauftragt waren, das Gewissen der neuen Generationen zu bilden, die notwendigen Ver\u00e4nderungen herbeif\u00fchren konnten, um den \u00f6ffentlichen Raum zu \u00f6ffnen; dass nur sie selbst, in Solidarit\u00e4t mit anderen emanzipierten Frauen und M\u00e4nnern, sich befreien konnte. Der Spiritismus brachte sie dazu, ihr eigenes Gewissen in die Hand zu nehmen und das von der Vernunft geforderte freie Denken einzusetzen, um eine moralische und intellektuelle Emanzipation zu erreichen, die sich nicht aus Regeln, Traditionen oder Br\u00e4uchen speist.
