Josefa Mart\u00ednez Torres wurde etwa zwischen 1862 und 1863 in Ponce (Puerto Rico) geboren. Der Name ihrer Mutter war Carmen Torres und der ihres Vaters Rom\u00e1n Mart\u00ednez. Von Geburt an war sie sehbehindert. Im Alter von zwei Jahren verlor sie ein Auge und war im Alter von acht Jahren vollst\u00e4ndig erblindet und im Alter von zehn oder elf Jahren verwaist, so dass sie in der Obhut einer Schwester blieb. Im September 1879 begann sie, ein spiritistisches Zentrum zu besuchen. Nach Angaben der spiritistischen Presse schlief sie oft w\u00e4hrend und au\u00dferhalb der S\u00e9ancen ein. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sie schlief in einem Zustand des Somnambulismus, der heute als hypnotische Trance bezeichnet wird. In diesem Zustand sang, lachte und tanzte Mart\u00ednez Torres, was die Aufmerksamkeit von Manuel de Jes\u00fas Morel y Pastor, aus Ponce erregte, der 1869 begann, als Notar in der Stadt Coamo zu arbeiten. Im Jahr 1875 wohnte er im ersten Stadtviertel von Ponce, war ledig, 38 Jahre alt und besa\u00df Eigentum. Im Jahr 1883 war er Eigent\u00fcmer des Establecimiento Tipogr\u00e1fico de M. J. Morel, das wahrscheinlich die sogenannte Morel-Druckerei war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nach Angaben der spanischen spiritistischen Presse erkannte Morel und Pastor, dass die junge Frau das Opfer eines besessenen Geistes war. Nach der spiritistischen Lehre sind Besessenheiten das Ergebnis der Herrschaft eines Geistes \u00fcber ein Medium.
